What is TOPSoccer?
TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based program for young athletes with physical/intellectual challenges, organized by Simsbury Soccer Club volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing the game of soccer to any girl or boy, ages 4 and up, no age limit. Our goal is to enable athletes with limited abilities to enjoy the fellowship, exercise and fun of playing soccer with their peers.
Simsbury’s TOPSoccer program began in 2002, and we currently have an average of 25 players out of the field each week learning the game of soccer, making friends and competing against other players and their mentors. Players have a wide range of challenges, including Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy.
When and Where?
Our TOPSoccer group meets on Saturday mornings, in both the fall and spring soccer seasons, from 9 - 10 a.m. Field TBD
We have a very dedicated group of middle school and high school aged soccer players who are Mentors to our TOPSoccer players. The Mentors are assigned a specific player in the beginning of the season, and work with that player on a weekly basis. The Mentors lead the players through a variety of warm-up exercises, soccer drills and scrimmages before ending each session with a group cheer.
